For men who take their health care seriously, it’s important to address the question of why is oral health important for men. As the advancements in medicine increase, the importance of dental care in relation to staying healthy is coming into clearer focus. The Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association have conducted studies and surveys that provide information that can improve the general health of men. For a variety of reasons, men have been found to be less likely than women to visit dentists on a regular basis for preventive dental care to the point where they neglect their oral health for years. Compared to women, in daily at-home care men do not brush their teeth after every meal or even twice a day. For these reasons men are more prone to develop periodontal disease than are women. But the link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease is the most alarming answer to why is oral health important to men? Because cardiovascular disease can a person at risk for heart attacks and strokes, men need to be watchful for any sign of gum disease such as loose teeth, bad breath that remains after brushing and red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums. To avoid gum disease it is very important for all men to on top of their oral care especially men who take prescription medications for high blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions or depression which can cause dry mouth. These medications have a tendency to inhibit the flow of saliva which helps keep your teeth and mouth free of cavity-causing bacteria and the acids which create dental plaque. In addition to increasing your water intake, dry mouth can be alleviated by chewing sugarless gum and avoiding alcohol, smoking and eating overly salty foods.
